Memorial Saturday of Meatfare

On the day before Meatfare Sunday, on which we remember the Last Judgement, the Orthodox Church prays for those of its members who may have died unexpectedly because of wars, plagues, starvation, or any other sort of death while they were in a foreign country, or while they were travelling by sea, by land, or by air. The Church also prays for the poor, or for those who may not have received a proper burial, or who had no one to request Memorial Services to be offered for them.
We pray for the departed on this Saturday because the Orthodox Church has established Saturday as the proper day of the week for remembering the dead. On this day before we hear the Gospel about the Last Judgement, we should pause to recall our own inescapable death when we shall appear before Christ to give an account of our lives. May we have "an acceptable defence before His dread Judgement Seat."

As we prepare for the spiritual struggles of the Great Fast, we should remember that we have been given this present life for repentance and for entreating God's mercy. When Christ comes in glory to judge the world, it will be too late then to say that we repent, or to ask for mercy. Therefore, we should make the most of the time that has been given us in order to struggle against every sinful impulse which separates us from God, to confess our sins, to correct ourselves, and to pursue a life of virtue and holiness.

During the week leading up to Meatfare Sunday, we do not sing "Alleluia" in place of "God is the Lord," at Matins. "Alleluia" is appointed to be sung on the Wednesday and Friday of Cheesefare Week, and also during Great Lent.

15 February - Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (Kyndilmessa)

Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (Kyndilmessa)
On Saturday, February 15 the Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Jesus at the Temple.

A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in the St.Nicholas home church in Reykjavik at Öldugata 44 at 10.00.

Meeting of the Lord

The Meeting of the Lord in the Temple (also called the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple) is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on February 2 and February 15 (which is in fact February 2 according to Julian Calendar). This feast is also known as Candlemas, particularly in Western nations, due to the custom of blessing candles on this day. In Iceland it's named Kyndilmessa (see: http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyndilmessa).

In Eastern tradition, it is often called The Meeting of Our Lord and God and Savior, Jesus Christ, because the hymns emphasize the incarnate God, the Lord Jesus Christ, meeting with his people, Israel, in the persons of the Prophet Simeon and the Prophetess Anna.

In the Gospel of Luke 2:22-35, Mary and Joseph took the infant Christ to the Temple in Jerusalem. He was received in the arms of the elder Simeon, who then prayed, "Now let Thy servant depart in peace... for I have seen Thy salvation." This was one of the things that Mary "pondered in her heart"- the fact that others recognized that her Son was the Messiah.

Hymns of the feast:

Troparion (Tone 1)
Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, full of grace! From you shone the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God. Enlightening those who sat in darkness! Rejoice, and be glad, O righteous elder; You accepted in your arms the Redeemer of our souls, Who grants us the Resurrection.

Kontakion (Tone 1)
By Your nativity, You did sanctify the Virgin's womb, And did bless Simeon's hands, O Christ God. Now You have come and saved us through love. Grant peace to all Orthodox Christians, O only Lover of man!
